|
|
I heard some parents recently saying that they've heard of schools banning dodge ball (which I'd heard of...) and tag. Another parent replied that they've heard some schools are thinking of banning PE altogether!! Too dangerous?! What the heck...I don't want 25 6th graders all day who have had no chance to run around outside!
Is anyone seeing or hearing of this for real or is it just speculation and exaggeration? |

| I was told no dodge ball last year but then when my principal subbed for me she let them play it. We are not banning PE but we do have to teach the class ourselves. I do have concerns about some areas of PE because I do not feel qualified (gymnastics, tumbling) and I do avoid those areas. I have heard of some schools cutting it (and recess) so that they can send the kids home earlier. |

| I teach PE and we still engage in dodgeball on occasion. If the game is modified for safety reasons(using foam balls, hitting below the waist, etc.) it is more fun and safe...the problems arise when the students "forget" the rules and start slamming each other with the balls...then they lose their right to play it. I am always amazed at some students who really excel at this game...even students who have no interest in sports or fitness activities! Karen |

Honestly, I've always been surprised that dodgeball is allowed at school. I played it as a child & I understand that it is a fun, harmless and easy game to play.
BUT, the children are throwing objects at each other with the intent of hitting another person! Don't other logical people see the contradiction in this sport?
If they threw a ball at a child during recess they would get in trouble. If they threw an object in class, they would probably be suspended. So, we tell the students it's ok to throw an object at a child with the intent of hitting them in a controlled game during PE, but at no other time in your life, and expect a young child to accept this.....
Amy - I know this wasn't the intent of your post, but I had to express that opinion. I ABSOLUTELY feel that children need PE. Especially with the obesity issues that America is facing. Our children need to be active... and so do I |

Okay. I'll try posting here again. My last post was erased because I included a link so I got that anti-spam message.
I am a dancing person, I love to dance. I also like playing basketball. I can't dribble, shoot, pass, or catch well but I still love it.
What little teaching experience I have with HISD was spent with mainly Pre-K through 2nd grade with a merest smatering of 3rd - 8th grade. Most of my students rely on their motor skills for prior knowledge. I need to use motion and music to engage my little kiddies in math lessons.
Lately I have even applied for some PE positions because I have found some wonderful ways to link PE and literacy and math.
It's true that I do not get as much regular exercise as I should but once I start teaching I don't plan on sitting down until the end of the year. ^_^ |

| I cannot believe there are actually schools that are considering elimination PE from the curriculum! I remember being in school and we had PE every other day, no matter what. And we didn't have the raging obesity problem amongst the students then either. Seems like the more they cut out PE, the more they complain about how fat our students are getting - so maybe the logical solution would be to stop cutting out physical activities for the sake of a shorter school day. I know at the middle school the kids only go to PE once a week. And at the high school I teach at the kids are only required to take PE for one semester during their entire 4 years of high school! I think it is a shame that this is being taken away from them. |
